you can easily mitigate the issue having a second cloudfront distribution pointing to the same S3 bucket and retrieving the JSON file directly from that distribution.

You cannot use the same distribution of the Lambda@Edge otherwise you will end up with an infinite loop and Amazon is preventing this.
